murder in Vienna

However, sex work is legal in Austria and in many other countries, it can still be very dangerous. There are many examples of violence against sex workers that show how risky this work is if you work independently or in unsafe, low-level brothels. Lately, more and more women say that the most important aspects when they are applying to a brothel are safety and how strongly the place protects its workers.

In this article, we collected four serious cases from the past years, where we reported the details, and which highlight these dangers and why more safety measures are needed.

Overview:

Three women killed in a Vienna sex studio

On February 25, 2024, a passerby called the police after seeing a blood trail leading to Studio 126a. After the police arrived, they found three women stabbed to death. One woman managed to survive by locking herself in a room. The police arrested a 27-year-old Afghan man with the weapon nearby.

Later, the investigators reported that the Afghan man was mentally unstable during the attack. He thought that the sex workers were witches and got his instructions from God.

Currently, it is still undecided if the 27-year-old man will be sentenced to prison or forced to undergo continuous treatment in a mental health institution.

Knifing attempt on two sex workers

In June 2020, a 22-year-old Czech man attacked three sex workers in Vienna, injuring one seriously. He first tried to attack one woman, but she saw the knife in a mirror and stopped him.
Later, he attacked a 34-year-old trans worker, stabbing her multiple times. She was saved by her roommate, who intervened but was also injured.

A psychiatrist said the attacker likely had a sadistic disorder and could harm others in the future. Read the whole article here:

Murder over refusing to quit prostitution

In Frankfurt, in October 2022, a 46-year-old man killed a 27-year-old sex worker because she refused to quit her job. They had first met in a sex club, and the man quickly became obsessed with her.

His behavior turned controlling, and he demanded that she stop working as a sex worker. However, the woman stood her ground and refused, which enraged him. One day, he followed her back to her apartment and brutally attacked her. He stabbed and strangled her, taking her life.

The crime remained hidden for months because the man went to extreme lengths to cover it up. He wrapped the woman’s body in tarps and concealed it behind wooden paneling in her apartment. The truth only came to light seven months later when the man himself confessed and led the police to the hidden body.

As investigators dug deeper into the case, they discovered that this man had a violent past. Years earlier, he had been convicted of throwing another woman out of a second-floor window. Although she survived, he was deemed insane at the time and sent to a psychiatric facility. Shockingly, he was released after only three years.

Acid attacks in Berlin

In Berlin’s Schöneberg district, a series of acid attacks shocked the community in 2019. Over a span of three weeks, seven sex workers, most of them trans women, were injured in these incidents.

The attackers used acid, a substance known to cause severe burns, permanent scars, and long-lasting emotional trauma. Despite the seriousness of these attacks, many victims chose not to report what happened. They were afraid of retaliation, public embarrassment, or the stigma attached to their line of work. This fear allowed the attackers to escape justice for longer, creating even more insecurity for sex workers in the area.

Police investigations revealed that these attacks were likely motivated by homophobia. Witnesses reported hearing the attackers shout hateful comments about the victims’ gender identity and sexual orientation during the assaults.

Why working in a high-class sex club in Vienna is safer

Working independently in the sex industry can be dangerous, even in such safe countries like Austria. Vienna is one of the best towns to live in the world, but this does not mean that there are no shady clients at night.

Even working in the smallest studios can lead to physical aggression because these places rarely spend money on safety.

One of the safest brothels in Vienna is the sex clubs. It is not a miracle that they always get a lot of applications from the girls who want to work in the night industry. These clubs prioritize professionalism and security to ensure both workers and clients are protected. For example, they strictly check clients before allowing them entry, which helps identify and prevent potential threats. This screening process creates a safer and more controlled environment for everyone involved.

The clubs also have professional bouncers who can step in every time a situation escalates. The entrance and the community areas are protected with security cameras, while the private rooms are equipped with alarm systems so the girls can ask for immediate help in danger.
